They called him Hack, and the nickname fit a man built close to the ground who hit baseballs as if the fences owed him money. Lewis Robert Wilson stood 5'6" and weighed 190 pounds, a right-handed stub of thunder who made his name with the Chicago Cubs when the Live Ball era was still learning how loud summer could get. Born 1900 · Ellwood City, PA, he played like the ballpark had insulted him personally every afternoon.
The career line is pure damage: 1348 games, 1461 hits, 244 home runs, 1063 runs batted in, a .307 average, 0.395 on-base, 0.545 slugging. He walked 674 times and scored 884. The clubs run from the New York Giants to the Cubs to Brooklyn, but the monument is North Side brick and thick summer air. Pitchers saw a short man and threw him mistakes; he turned those mistakes into souvenirs for the bleachers.
In 1930 he hit 56 home runs and drove in 191 — a National League RBI mark that still stands — while batting .356 and slugging .723. The years around that peak stayed loud: 39 homers and 159 ribbies in 1929, 31 and 120 in 1928, 30 and 129 in 1927. Compact frame. Expansive box scores. The Hall of Fame caught up later; the ledger never needed the speech.
