1940: Hank Greenberg, in his final season before military service, put together one of the great offensive campaigns in Detroit history. The Tiger slugger hit .340 with a .433 on-base mark and a .670 slugging average, leading the American League in home runs (41), RBI (150), doubles (50), and extra-base hits. He scored 129 runs, collected 195 hits, and added eight triples while shifting to the outfield. Detroit won 90 games and the pennant, and Greenberg, at season's end, was named the league's Most Valuable Player.
