They are calling him Double X before he has to buy his own razor, and a duck-legged kid from Sudlersville, Maryland, don't argue with a roomful of cigar smoke that has already made up its mind. Connie Mack squints at those wrists—they got Maryland in 'em, sure, but they got whip and timber, too—and he scratches the name into the Philadelphia order like a man filling out a claim form for storm damage, with the American League as the adjuster.

Boston buys the rest of the act. Fenway's crazy fences do not trouble him. Forty-one his first summer in red; fifty bombs and a hundred seventy-five ribbies in '38, same Maryland cut, different mail slot. The American League keeps making the same wager: pitch to the fella, as if the fella might forget what he does.

Five hundred and thirty-four lifetime. A slash of .325 / .428 / .609. Sudlersville sent him up. Philly made him inevitable. Boston got the late chapters. Say fifty-eight out loud, and a man can still hear that timber connect—clean, final, like a safe door shutting on the whole argument.
