The kid from San Francisco’s fishing docks came east in 1936 and the town never quite got over it. Six-foot-two of quiet grace, he patrolled center field like he owned the grass, which, for thirteen summers, he more or less did. They called him the Yankee Clipper for the way he sailed after fly balls, and Joltin’ Joe for what he did to fastballs.

The numbers hold up like granite. A lifetime .325 average, 361 homers, 1,537 ribbies. Three MVPs. Nine world championships in pinstripes. But the streak is the thing they still argue about in barbershops from the Bronx to the Bay. Fifty-six straight games with a hit in 1941, a stretch of baseball so pure it reads like a fever dream. Cleveland’s third baseman, Ken Keltner, made two plays that ended it, and even then, the legend only grew.

He gave three years to the war, 1943 to 1945, prime years gone to Uncle Sam. No lines on the back for those seasons, just a blank space where the myth might have grown taller. He came back and won another ring, because of course he did.

He was never loud about it. Just showed up, hit, glided, and won. When he left the game in 1951, the grace went with him. A fisherman’s son who became the standard by which all center fielders are measured. They don’t make them like that anymore. They never really did.
