1934 belonged to Lou Gehrig, and he took it the way a man takes a long shift — head down, no fuss. The Iron Horse hit .363, slugged .706, drove in 165 runs, and knocked 49 over the fence, a Triple Crown season nobody could argue with. He reached base 109 times on walks and scored 128. The Yankees had the Babe, but this year the quiet man in the lineup did the heavy lifting.
