About this park

Candlestick belonged to the wind. Cold air off the bay knocked down flies and turned summer nights into jacket weather. Pitchers preferred the Stick for the same reason hitters packed extra lumber and still came up short.

The dimensions themselves were only half the story; the gusts did the rest. A ball that carries in most parks died in right-center here. Walk out of the concourse and you felt the weather before you saw the grass — that was the park's greeting.
