Frank Schulte swung like a prairie fire and ran like one, and in 1911 the whole National League smelled smoke. He hit .300 for the Cubs, piled up 173 hits, and slammed 21 home runs and 21 triples in the same summer — the first man ever to do it. Thirty doubles, 105 runs, 107 driven in, a .534 slugging mark, and the Chalmers Award with his name on it. Wildfire, they called him, and for one season the nickname fit like a glove.
