The Flying Dutchman was never so October as in 1909. Honus Wagner, thirty-five and bow-legged, hit .339 with a hundred ribbies and steered Pittsburgh past Ty Cobb’s Tigers. In the Series he went eight-for-twenty-four, swiped six bags, and out-hit Cobb himself while the Pirates took the flag in seven. The old shortstop’s legs still carried thunder.
