Behind the plate for 134 games, Ray Schalk did the unglamorous arithmetic of a catcher's summer: 655 putouts, 159 assists, 12 passed balls, and a .266 average that says more about endurance than art. He drove in 54 runs and stole 15 bases — a catcher's legs, not a sprinter's. The White Sox won 93 and still watched the pennant from the porch.
